A friend of mine runs a fun comic site called ZooDotCom. Just a little plug for it here. It makes me laugh. Although I’m waiting on him and yet another friend to get Lil Monstas released, as that shows promise as well. But no pressure guys. 🙂
I went to high school with this guy…ugh…well, good for him. This is a link to his NFL Salary the past 4 years as the punter for the Indianapolis Colts.
Maggie and I have booked our “Home for the Holidays” flights. We’ll be back in Dallas around 10 AM Thursday Decemeber 23rd and fly back to NYC around 5 PM Thursday December 30th. Can’t wait to see everyone back home. Going to have to go eat at Pluckers!!!
Well, today we woke up and it was 34 degrees. Starting to get cooler here. Hmm, if this is the temp in November…I can’t imagine the temp in January. Good thing we started buying warmer clothes. I see that Dallas had a low of 53 degrees. Well, at least we’re keeping the 20 degree average difference intact.
Maggie and I made it to Central Park and enjoyed a little time there drinking hot chocolate. They’ve also converted Wollman Skating Rink into an ice skating rink already. I believe this is the same rink in the movie Serendipity. Going to need to skate there and at Rockafeller Center ( They had theirs setup when Andy came up in mid-October ). It will be my first time to ice skate outdoors since it’s pretty tough to have an outdoor rink in Texas, even at the coldest of times.
This is sad. I live in a fairly large apartment complex and they gave out signs to those of us who would be handing out candy. I put my sign up and waited for kids to come by. I know there are lots in the building and I saw a lot of them at the special pre-party at the apartment office. But how many came by? ONE! That’s right, ONE! I bought all this candy and only gave out to one kid. Now it just stares at me taunting me to eat it.
I went to a Postgresql seminar near Philadelphia today that was very fun. Not necessarily the Postgresql part ( although it was good and I learned some things I didn’t know ), but I got to meet some people there I had only met via message boards or IM. Let’s see, Robert Sfeir ( someone I met through the IDEA EAP message boards), Brian McCallister (who’s blog I read regularly), Thomas Risberg (one of the Spring Framework developers), Aaron Mulder (one of the Geronimo server developers), and Brian Kilpatrick (a guy I met there, but also lives in NYC). It was quite the Java Developer crowd so we decided to go to dinner after the seminar and had a great time doing geeky things like discussing app servers and Spring and brain teaser puzzles. It was a blast and we all need to get together again.
After watching this short film, I don’t think I can look at Tetris the same way again. I just wonder if maybe it’s a trick of motion capture or if the guy is really playing that fast. Seems somewhat unbelievable.
(There are going to be multiple entries with this headline…write about them as I see them)
Everyone in this town smokes. The first thing you see most people do when they leave a building or a resturant (all smoke free BTW) is to pull out a pack of smokes (or bum one from a friend) and light up.
In fact, of the 10-15 people on my floor, I’m the only one that doesn’t smoke.
I guess the stress and tension of the Big City must eventually get to everyone…my first sign of time to move away is when I feel the need for a cigarette. 🙂
My only pet peeve about having a Boston team in the Finals: When the Boston mayor makes the stupid bet with the other team’s mayor. Drives me crazy.
For instance, before the World Series, Mayor Menino of Boston wagered a bunch of Boston beer and food products (Legal Seafood’s clam chowder, a case of Sam Adams beer, 11 pounds of Dunkin Donuts coffee and a bunch of other Boston-related stuff in exchange for Anheuser-Busch Products, Toasted Ravioli, Bissinger Chocolate and some other St. Louis goodies from Mayor Clark Griswold.
That’s a bet? Those are high stakes? Oh, no, we lost … darn, we’re never gonna replace all that clam chowder; I never should have let him sucker me into that. Please. I hate this stuff. Just one of these times, I want one of the mayors to throw something out there like, “If you guys win, I’ll sleep with a tranvestite … if we win, you have to try heroin and speed at the same time.” Now THAT would get people talking.
That had me uncontrollably laughing in the office.
Another interesting tidbit from that column was this:
Weird fact in case you missed it: The Celtics won their first championship against St. Louis (1957); the Bruins broke a 41-year Stanley Cup drought against St. Louis (1970); and the Patriots won their first Super Bowl against St. Louis (2002).
And the joke:
Q: What do you call 25 guys watching the World Series?
A: The Yankees
Got an email from NetFlix that they are lowering the price of my subscription…now if only there would be an announcement that they are going to get the hockey season underway, it would be bliss!
Just read on Slashdot that XM has annouced this little beauty. A personal XM receiver with recording capability. Oh my…I wonder how well it would work in my office? Or on the Subway. 🙂
I could see listening to iPod on Subway/Commute, MyFi in office or on walks. Decisions, decisions….next up, convicing my wife I need one for Christmas! 🙂
First news from a friend about the new Apple iPods. Looks like they have a cool looking new “U2” edition iPod and the new “Photo” versions that have a color screen and the ability to show photos. Hmm, interesting, but I don’t find myself needing to show off my photo collection all the time. Not to mention the extra $100 for the 40g model with the only changes being the photo stuff and the color screen. And $200 more for a 60GB version. Hmm, for one of the first times, I’m not having “you’ve been obsoleted” remorse on this one, since I just got my 4th gen 40GB iPod about a month ago. I’m very happy with it, and I also see they are going to continue selling it. I figure it will still be the bread and butter model along with the mini.
Right after I got IMed about the iPods, I get an IM that the IDEA EAP has started for 5.0! How exciting. I love living on the bleeding edge and sometimes with IDEA EAPs, there’s a lot of bleeding going on. Especially early. In fact, I’ve already crashed it once. Doh!
I really want the new VCS integrations to be as good as the CVS integration they have. Since I use Subversion for projects at home and Perforce for work.
Maggie has a guest up this weekend (her name is Kelli) to help celebrate Maggie’s B-Day (Happy Birthday dear!) . Kelli (and Maggie and I) wanted to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, so we made our first ever trek there. Of course, all the way there, I keep quoting Joey from Friends…”The METS!”
The museum was very nice. It is extremely large and has a great collection of Modern Art, although I could only find one Dali painting. There were a lot of Picasso’s though and those can be “interesting”.
We also quickly checked out Greek and Roman sculpture and then decided it was time to go eat, so Maggie and I still have a ton of museum to check out.
Then later that night Maggie wanted to go to Century 21 for some shopping and then to eat B-Day dinner in Chinatown, which as it turns out will always be a bit of an adventure for us.
On our way to Century 21 (which is a very popular NYC bargain shopping location, Zagat Rated #1!!!) there were a few, um, “merchants” making great deals on “Rolex” watches, “Louis Vuitton” handbags as well as “Burberry” handbags. Not to mention great DVDs such as “Team America: World Police”, “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”, and “The Day After Tomorrow”. I just assume these are market test copies to make sure the DVD will do well in NYC. 😉
Well, Kelli went a bit crazy with the handbag guys and got them in a bit of a feeding frenzy and after some haggling, she got 3 bags for a great “deal”. All the time I kept getting pestered by the DVD test market guy and the guy with the “Rolex” watches. These guys do not take “No” for an answer.
After that, Century 21 was a bit of a rushed experience since we only had 30 minutes left until they closed, but I ended up getting some gloves (I hear I will need them). Finally, we made our way to Chinatown.
Once there, the sidewalks again had a few “merchants” selling a nice assortment of premium handbags and those market test DVDs. We tried to find the resturant Maggie and I ate at the last time we came to Chinatown, but failed. It was such a hole in the wall place, I’m not surprised we didn’t find it this time. So we wandered over to highly rated (the Zagat guide tells us so!) place also recommended by a co-worker and of course, the line is out the door. No chance getting in there before starvation sets in.
We settled on this little place called “Yeah Shanghi” which turned out to be quite nice…although at first we had our doubts. You see, we came in and told the greeter that we had a party of 3. This waiter comes back and says “You can sit now if you don’t mind a short table”. The 3 of us looked at each other and came to the conclusion we had no problems with a “short” table so long as we could eat soon. So I say sure, we’ll take the “short” table. Turns out I need to clean my ears out and get better at understanding a thick Asian accent. The waiter immediately turned around and asked the family ahead of us to come along and then motioned for us. We were all confused till it dawned on us he had said “share a table”. I thought “Oh my God, this is Maggie’s B-Day dinner and we are going to be sitting at a table with strangers and she’s going to kill me later”.
We ended up eating dinner with a very lovely family visiting the USA for the first time from the UK who were more than happy to answer the litany of questions from myself and Kelli. They were also amazed at how cheap “petrol” is here. We figured it to be about $15 a gallon for gas over there!!!! The dad told us he spends about $100 USD to fill up his car! No wonder they drive small, efficient cars over there. And we were a bit surprised to learn they drink their tea with milk in it. Hmm, I just don’t know if I can bring myself to try that. We bid them a good night and good visit and made our way over to a sweet shop in Little Italy. (Amazing, can’t find the Chinese place from before, but made a beeline to the sweet shop!) Got a nice chocolate strawberry tart for myself and a eclair for Maggie.
Finally, got home and put an end to a wonerful and exciting day of NYC adventures.
After Jim’s debacle with not having comment preview, I’ve found a comment preview hack for WordPress. It seems to work decently well, although I want to hack at it to allow for linking back to the blog entry. But it is functional. Enjoy!
And sorry Jim…although I love the idea of a “Big Adventure”, I think this Blog will hopefully outlive my current adventure and I can then write about more of them without having to change the title. 🙂
I’ve come to the conclusion that the offical portable music player of New York City is the Apple iPod. I swear, 3 out of 4 people with headphones on are listening to the iPod. What amazing market penetration for Apple. Let’s hope they can keep it up. I know I greatly enjoy my iPod…makes ignoring people on the subway easier.
