A couple of notes about building native gems on leopard
I wanted to wish all my family and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2007 has been a good year for us and here’s looking forward to an even better 2008. Â
Back in August, knowing that Maggie would be graduating this semester, we planned a celebration trip to Las Vegas. This past weekend Maggie graduated with a degree in English and on Sunday we left for Sin City.
We were already booked into a pretty nice hotel, The Wynn Las Vegas, and when we went to check-in, we were offered to upgrade to a suite for a pretty reasonable charge. I went for it, since we were celebrating for Maggie. All I can say is “WORTH IT”!
We had our own separate entrance and elevators. Up to the 55th floor we went and entered the room. Our mouths hit the floor.
What follows are some pictures of our suite and how freaking awesome it was. They do not do this room complete justice. If you are offered the upgrade to the Salon Suite at the Wynn, go for it!
Congratulations Maggie! I hope you had a great trip!
If you’re like me, you’ve subscribed to a ton of Blog feeds. I was up to around 200 until I read a friend of mine Will’s post about consuming blogs. That post has changed my blog reading life.
I went from having hundred’s of unread posts when I got home to my Newsreader, to maybe a max of 20 entries when I check. I also got rid of the post machines BoingBoing and Slashdot. I basically went through my blog list and if there was something I constantly marking “all read”, then I dropped it.
I figure if something on BoingBoing or Slashdot is worth it, someone I know will link to it or send it to me. That has made as huge a difference as reading posts throughout the day.
Google Reader’s interface makes it very easy to glide through posts and choose which ones to read later either via marking it with a star or opening the post in a new tab for reading during my next blog break.
If you aren’t using a Feed Reader, I highly recommend it.
Will has also posted about other Media consumption, but the blog one really helped me out.
The Human Calendar is pretty cool. It took me a minute to “get it” that all the other people in the calendar were looking at today’s date. Pretty neat.
Well, the NHL season is a little over a quarter of the way complete. So far, the Stars have been very inconsistent ( except for that nice 6 game winning streak last week ). They started the season very uneven and lost some real heartbreakers. The most brutal of which was the game against the LA Kings where the Stars were leading 4-0 with less than 10 minutes to play and lost 6-5 in overtime.
That loss lead to the firing of General Manager Doug Armstrong and put President Jim Lites elsewhere in the organization. New Co-GMs Brett Hull and Les Jackson and new President Jeff Cogen seem to have at least cleared the air. The Stars have looked better since then, going on the 6 game streak, and playing a little harder. Modano has finally decided to show up for the season and fight through some checks.
The new management has made a couple of nice moves in getting rid of Fedoruk ( someone we should have never signed ) and bringing up some of the kids that we fans have been hearing about forever and yet have never really been given a chance.
Erikson appears to be making something of his time this time since he’s getting top 6 forward minutes and producing a little bit.
Most of the fan angst I’ve read at this point is our need for a scoring winger. While I agree we need a sniper, I think we also need to be on the lookout for a top notch #1 center. Modano is not that #1 guy anymore. His role now needs to become what Joe Nieuwendyk’s was during the cup runs. A great #2 center, that when not facing the other team’s top checking line can do a lot of damage. Modano still has crazy skills, but he needs to go up against the second best defense.
I also don’t think our defense and goaltending has been the best this year. The defense is making a lot more mistakes, and sadly, it’s not the two rookies making the most of them. For some reason, Daley has regressed a great deal from last year. He’s the one playing like a rookie. Marty Turco hasn’t been playing all that well and Mike Smith is giving up juicy rebounds. They need to tighten things up around the net for sure.
I have no idea where this team might end up, but I’m hoping the current 2 game skid is due more to fatigue than anything ( 6 road games in 9 nights is brutal ) and that once they get a chance to catch their breath they’ll get back to some winning streaks.
As for the playoffs, I think we could finally break into the second round again, but it would be short lived. There are just too many great teams in the Western Conference. I’m just hoping the Stars surprise me.
I think it’s something about the music that makes this somewhat disturbing
Been a long while since I’ve posted. In that time we’ve had Halloween where Brenden went as a adorable dragon ( pic at Maggie’s site ) .
We also went to Maggie’s sister’s wedding in California and has a great time. Well, except for Brenden not having the best sleeping patterns. You know, like screaming his head off until 1 and 2 AM. Other than that it was a lot of fun. I went sport fishing with the men of the family and caught a lot of mackerel.
Thanksgiving was also very nice. Maggie’s aforementioned sister and her new husband came to visit with Maggie’s other sister’s two boys. We did the normal family stuff of playing Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly. I lost at Trivial Pursuit ( darn you Maggie ), but completely dominated Monopoly.
We got a real Christmas tree for this year. ( see pic of Maggie and Brenden while we were tree hunting ) I think once in my life my family ( or wherever I was staying ) had a real tree. This will be an interesting adventure. We have baby gates setup so Brenden can’t get to the tree and destroy it. He’s unamused by these gates since we haven’t had anything like them before. He’s not use to be unable to get somewhere in the house that doesn’t have a door.
School is going well this semester. I have a final on Monday and I think I have a pretty good shot at an A+ for the class.
In two weeks, Maggie and I will be off to Vegas to celebrate her graduation from college with a degree in English. We’re very much looking forward to that.
So I think that gets me all caught up and ready to either post more or again neglect the blog and have to make another catchup post in January.
Avalanche 4, Stars 3
At least this game didn’t remain the blowout it was becoming. I’m also glad that Morrow came back. That was a nasty spill he took. I’m guessing he broke his nose.
And I’m guessing it’s going to be another year of the Comeback Kids. I just wish the Stars would play with the urgency throughout the game as they do when they are down by a couple of goals in the third period.
For those that can’t tell, I’m going to try and blog about the season as it goes along. I’ve got a ticket to the Home Opener on Friday and I’m just sure the Stars can beat Boston….right?
Tomorrow the start of the 2007-2008 NHL Season and I’m pumped up for it. Well, I guess technically, the season started over the weekend in London, but that was almost like exhibition games. Tomorrow is the real start when all the teams in the league get going.
And that includes my beloved Dallas Stars. They had a heartbreaking first round loss to those pesky Vancouver Canucks, but I’m hoping for good things this year. Not many people are seeing the Stars have success based on the fact they had some terrible offense during the end of last year and didn’t make any significant offseason moves.
It got me thinking about the beginning of last year. Before the injury bug hit, the Stars offense was clicking and we were 11-2. Then Steve Ott got injured and we lost the heart of the energy line. Then Modano and Morrow went down and the offense never really recovered, even when they came back. The rhythm wasn’t there.
So I think that gives hope to this year’s team. Most everyone is healthy, except for Mike Ribeiro ( who was our top scorer ) but he should be back in about a week, and I’m thinking this might be the year for some of the younger guys to break out. I’m also hoping that maybe one day the coaches will allow a little more offensive creativity at the expense of defense and let Turco clean up any mistakes. As both Mike Heika and The Razor have said, “You only need to score more than your opponent, even if that means 6-5”.
I’m a little disappointed Chris Conner didn’t make the team to start the season since he was the highest scorer for the Stars in the pre-season. I’m betting he’s the first call up if there’s an injury to a forward.
So here’s the start of another hockey season! It will be great taking it all in! ( Did I mention I got Center Ice this year? That’s all the hockey games every night! )
Over the past couple of days I’ve had two distinct “getting older” moments. The first was while talking to one of the new guys at work and discussing a movie, which one, I don’t quite remember. His response was “that movie was before my time”, and I was like “but that was like the late 80s”, and he piped up with he was born in 1985. That makes him born after things like E.T., Return of the Jedi, and Bambi. So now I know how all those folks felt when I was a new-hire at 18.
The other moment was when Maggie and I were headed to Best Buy and we got excited when we saw refrigerators outside. We both looked at each other and said “Isn’t it sad that we’re getting excited about major appliances?”. I think it says something about our changing priorities in life. I also do think that the appliances are getting more features that appeal to me, like the washer and dryer that communicate where the washer tells the dryer what was just washed and it sets itself up to dry that. Pretty neat. Man, I am getting older.
Over Labor Day weekend, Maggie, Brenden and I went to Denver to visit friends of mine and their 3 boys. Did I mention we drove there? 13 hours of driving there. I was actually amazed at how well Brenden did with being confined for that long. It did make us alter our return drive to try and help him by planning in more running around time.
We had a very good visit. For Friday, our friends had things going on, so we took Brenden down see the Denver Children’s Museum. It was a very awesome place where kids get to just run around and learn about stuff from Firetrucks, to art, to being a vet, to sports. Brenden really liked the simulated grocery store where he pushed a miniature shopping cart around and picked up plastic vegetables and other fun things.
After that, we headed over to the 16th Street Mall and walked up and down it looking for the Tattered Cover Bookstore some of my friends had told me about. We parked, walked to the other end of the mall and didn’t see it. So I finally asked someone and they said “oh, it’s way at the other end”. Turns out, we parked practically on top of it, but we started up a block and missed it.
The next day we went up into the mountains and went to the top of Mt. Evans, which is a lovely 14,000 ft. When we got to the entrance of the summit road at 11,000 ft, there was a weather board there to tell us the temp in Denver ( 80ish ), were we were ( 60ish ) and at the summit ( 40ish, with windchills in the 20s ). It’s amazing how much colder the higher altitudes are.
After coming down off the mountain, we went to this cute little play place called Tiny Town. Brenden loved it! It has all this houses built to toddler size. He kept going back to the same ones, but he certainly enjoyed himself. We even rode their little train.
Sunday was lots of fun at a local rec center that had this amazing water park. It was all indoors and had a lap pool, a lazy river, a kids area and two slides. I rode the slides a bunch and so did Maggie. Brenden had fun in the water, but would occasionally put his face down in it accidently and surprise himself and start to cough water he tried to breathe.
We had a lot of fun with our friends and their family. Brenden got to watch 3 older boys ( ages 2 – 5 ) and learned a bunch, like how to go up and down stairs. He just started practicing it the minute he was shown how to go down the stairs ( he had figured out up already ). The boys loved him and I think enjoyed playing with him.
We’re going to have to make that trip again, but I think next time, it might be better to fly. Or to maybe have an RV so that Maggie and Brenden can run around on the way.
For pics, check out Maggie’s post.
Two weeks ago Weird Al made a stop in the DFW area. He was supposed to play in McKinney, but the venue got a little to soggy ( it was outdoors ) and the event was moved to Garland to their “Special Events Center”.
This of course caused some major headaches with seating and such, but in the end I was very impressed with his show and his ability as a perfomer. I went with a buddy of mine and we had a pretty good time.
Weird Al played a lot of my old favorites, plus a few songs I didn’t know. Most all songs were done in the costume in which he did the music videos I remember for them. For example, the fat suit he wore in “I’m Fat” ( parody of Michael Jackson’s “I’m Bad” ) and the Jedi getup he wore in the “The Saga Begins” ( the American Pie parody ).
The only downside to the show was that to facilitate the costume changes, they had to take a lot of breaks between songs. This time was filled with random Al TV interviews with the likes of Eminem, Madonna, and Celine Deon. These interviews were cut to make the answers make the stars look like idiots. Pretty funny stuff.
While waiting in line to get in, I ran in a cousin of mine that I remembered does some photo shooting for concerts and such. I didn’t expect to see him there and of course he was there to shoot. He got shots during the first three songs and one during a “meet and greet” afterwards. My cousin has been kind enough to let me post them here.
For the first time in my life, I have read a book straight through without taking a break for silly things like sleeping ( Maggie was up with me, no idea if that’s happened to her before ). Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows is well worth the wait and all the reading leading up to it. For now, I’ll leave it at that. Once others have had a chance to finish the tale, I’ll post my further thoughts about the plot and relvalations.
